How to download an Instagram profile picture

The short answer

To download an Instagram profile picture, type the account's username into IGDownPro and press Download. You get the full-resolution avatar — up to 320×320, the largest size Instagram stores — instead of the small cropped circle the app displays.

Why you cannot just tap to enlarge

Instagram renders avatars as a small circle and gives you no way to open them. Tapping does nothing; there is no lightbox, no “view full size”, and the image is cropped to a circle in the interface even though the stored file is square.

Zooming in on a screenshot makes it worse — you are enlarging the tiny rendered thumbnail, not fetching a bigger file. What you want is the source image behind the circle, which Instagram serves publicly for any public account.

Because avatars are attached to a profile rather than a post, you do not need a post URL. A username is enough to look one up, which makes this the quickest of the seven tools to use.

Step-by-step: viewing an avatar at full size

No post link needed — the handle alone is enough.

  1. Find the username

It is the handle after the @ symbol on the profile, or the last part of the profile URL — instagram.com/username.

  2. Type it into IGDownPro

Open the Instagram Profile Picture Downloader and enter the username, with or without the @. A full profile URL works too.

  3. Press Download

IGDownPro looks up the public profile and displays the avatar uncropped, at the largest size Instagram stores.

  4. Save the image

Click Download to save the JPG. On mobile you can also long-press the preview and save it to your photo library.

Device-specific notes

Where the file ends up differs by platform — this is the part that trips people up.

iPhone and iPad

  1. Paste the link into IGDownPro in Safari and press Download.
  2. Long-press the avatar preview and choose “Add to Photos” to save it straight to your camera roll.
  3. Or use Safari's download arrow, then the share sheet, and choose “Save Image”.

Android

  1. Paste the link into IGDownPro in Chrome and press Download.
  2. Long-press the avatar and choose “Download image”, or use the Download button on the card.
  3. The JPG appears in Downloads and, usually, in Google Photos.

Windows, macOS, Linux

  1. Paste the link into IGDownPro and click Download.
  2. The JPG saves to your Downloads folder at full stored resolution.
  3. Right-click the preview and choose “Save image as…” if you prefer to pick the folder.

The real size limit on avatars

This is the one place where expectations and reality diverge sharply, so it is worth being blunt about it.

The real size limit on avatars — format and resolution
Typical size320 × 320 JPG for most accounts.
ShapeSquare — the circular crop is interface, not file.
FormatJPG, no transparency.
Hard ceilingInstagram stores nothing larger. There is no HD version.

Any site promising a “1080p HD profile picture” is upscaling a 320px image and calling the interpolated result HD. The larger file does not exist server-side, so it cannot be downloaded — by us or by anyone.

How to avoid the dangerous downloaders

This is a category full of hostile sites. A few rules will keep you out of trouble.

  • Never enter your Instagram login. Downloading a public post requires no authentication whatsoever. A site that asks for your username and password is harvesting accounts, full stop.
  • Do not install a browser extension for this. Extensions with permission to read instagram.com can read your session too. A plain website cannot.
  • Be wary of .exe or .apk downloads. Saving a file needs no installed software. An installer offer is malware more often than not.
  • Ignore “you must allow notifications” gates. That is an ad-spam subscription, not a technical requirement.
  • Check the file you got. IGDownPro returns .mp4 video or .jpg image files. If a download arrives as .zip, .exe, .apk or .scr, delete it without opening it.

Frequently asked questions

How large is a downloaded Instagram profile picture?

Instagram stores avatars at up to 320×320 for most accounts. That is the ceiling — a larger version does not exist server-side, so any tool promising 1080p avatars is upscaling an image that was never that big.

Can I see a private account's profile picture?

No. Private profiles do not expose their avatar publicly, and IGDownPro will not attempt to bypass that. The circle you see in the app for a private account is all that is served.

Do I need the profile URL, or is a username enough?

A username is enough. Type the handle with or without the @ and IGDownPro resolves it. Pasting the full instagram.com/username URL works identically if that is what you have on the clipboard.

Will the account holder know I looked?

The lookup does not use your logged-in Instagram session or interact with the profile. The avatar file is requested by your browser from Instagram's CDN, which can receive ordinary network information such as IP address and browser details.

Do I need to follow the account first?

No. Public profiles resolve whether or not you follow them. Following only matters for private accounts, which are out of scope entirely.

Can I use someone's profile picture on my own account?

Not without permission. A profile picture is someone's likeness and, usually, their copyrighted photo. Using it as your own avatar also risks being reported as impersonation.
