How to download and back up your own Instagram content

Export your Instagram information through Accounts Center
Open Accounts Center
From Instagram settings, open Accounts Center and choose Your information and permissions.
Choose Export your information
Create an export and select the Instagram profile you want to back up.
Select a destination
Choose export to device or a supported external service. Use a destination with enough protected storage.
Limit or expand the archive
Select all information or specific categories, then choose date range, format, notification email and media quality.
Start and wait for preparation
Instagram prepares the archive and notifies you when it is ready. Meta says preparation can take time, depending on the request.
Download before the window closes
Current help guidance says a prepared device export remains available for a limited period, so retrieve it promptly and store it securely.
Save one of your own posts immediately
For an eligible Reel, check the post's options or Share controls for a native Download or Save to device action. Availability depends on the content and current Instagram interface. For a public post without a suitable native file action, copy its individual link and use the matching IGDownPro tool.
A single-post download is convenient but incomplete as a backup strategy. It normally does not preserve captions, comments, account settings or the broader history that an official export can include.
Check Recently Deleted before assuming content is gone
Instagram moves eligible deleted content into Recently Deleted before permanent removal. Meta's current help information says most eligible content remains there for 30 days, while Stories not in the archive can have a shorter period.
If you accidentally deleted your own post, use Instagram's restoration controls first. A public downloader cannot resolve a post that Instagram no longer makes available at its original public URL.
Build a backup you can actually use
- Keep at least two copies in separate storage locations.
- Use a year/month folder structure for media and preserve the export metadata alongside it.
- Retain original filenames until you verify how archive records reference them.
- Create a short README noting the account, export date, date range, format and media-quality choice.
- Encrypt or otherwise protect archives containing messages, account history or personal information.
- Test a few images, videos and metadata files before treating the backup as complete.
- Repeat exports on a schedule appropriate to how often you publish.
What an Instagram export does not guarantee
An export is a snapshot of information Meta makes available for the selected account and request settings. It is not automatically synchronized after creation, and its media may reflect the quality choice you selected. Deleted or unsent information may not appear.
Keep the camera originals and editing project files separately whenever possible. Instagram is a publication destination, not the only storage location for irreplaceable work.
